Tax Attorneys Assist in

April 15, 2014
C. Wells Hall, III

As part of their commitment to pro bono services, Nelson Mullins tax attorneys have found an opportunity to join five other law firms to provide service for the dedicated men and women in the armed forces and their families. At the helm for Nelson Mullins is partner Wells Hall, who participated as an instructor at Fort Bragg in North Carolina in December 2013. The Firm covered military Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) in South Carolina at Shaw Air Force Base and Fort Jackson with Myrtle Beach attorneys Paula Watford and Jim McCracken along with Mr. Hall sharing the instruction responsibilities.

The American Bar Association Tax Section recruited law firms and individuals to teach a military VITA program on 10 military installations across the country through the "Adopt-A-Base" program. "Adopt-A-Base" is a program in which the ABA Tax Section partners with the military and the IRS to help train service members become volunteer return preparers through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program (VITA). VITA is used by many military installations in that members of the armed forces and their families have access to free tax preparation services. In turn, the military and IRS provides the Section with installations interested in being adopted.  The Section then recruits law firms and groups of individuals that commit to adopting a local base on the list.

"All of us enjoyed the experience and agreed to do it again next year," said Mr. Hall. "We hope to double the coverage of bases next year. The Military VITA program and tax lawyers are a perfect match."

The Section sees the participation as a strong step forward for the program and is working hard to keep up with the growing requests from bases wanting member coverage in future years.
