Nelson Mullins Expands Healthcare Practice with the Addition of Two Experienced Attorneys in Raleigh
RALEIGH (July 6, 2016)--Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP has expanded its North Carolina healthcare team with the addition of two experienced partners. The team includes Robert L. Wilson, Jr., formerly a partner in charge of another firm’s Raleigh office, and Patricia A. Markus, also a former partner at Wilson’s law firm. The two work with healthcare industry clients to find innovative and regulatory-compliant business solutions in the constantly changing healthcare industry.

Mr. Wilson represents a number of hospitals and health systems as general and special counsel in corporate, regulatory, operations, licensure, reimbursement, fraud and abuse, and administrative law issues. He also represents hospitals and health systems in network development and affiliation strategies, including accountable care organization development and clinically integrated network operations, and represents physician groups, both single-specialty and multi-specialty, as general counsel. He has served as legal counsel to large physician groups dealing with practice management divestitures, corporate practice of medicine, contracts, and related issues.
Ms. Markus represents healthcare providers and related organizations on an array of healthcare regulatory compliance and operational matters, with a special focus on issues surrounding health information privacy, security, and technology. She regularly advises clients on HIPAA and other federal and state law privacy and security compliance, responding to data breaches, meaningful use compliance and audits, clinical research and other innovative uses of data, and telemedicine. She also represents healthcare clients in reimbursement appeals, acquisitions and divestitures, and she serves as regulatory counsel to several behavioral health and substance abuse treatment providers.
Both Mr. Wilson and Ms. Markus have held leadership positions in state and national legal professional organizations. Mr. Wilson has twice been elected president of the North Carolina Society of Healthcare Attorneys and has also served as chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Health Law Section. Ms. Markus has held various leadership positions in the American Health Lawyers Association and currently serves on its Board of Directors. She is a past chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Health Law Section and a former president of the North Carolina Society of Healthcare Attorneys.
