Nelson Mullins’ Wells Hall Honored with ABA
Tax Section Pro Bono Award

Charlotte (Feb. 1, 2017)–The American Bar Association Section of Taxation has honored C. Wells Hall, III, a partner in Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Charlotte office, with the 2017 Janet Spragens Pro Bono Award.

Mr. Hall served as section vice chair for pro bono and outreach from 2013 to 2016. During his tenure he championed programs to increase pro bono participation among section membership and access to tax assistance for low-income and underserved populations. Among other efforts, Mr. Hall was a driving force behind the Section's "Adopt-A-Base" program, through which tax attorneys provide Military Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program training to service personnel on military bases throughout the country. Under Mr. Hall's leadership, the Adopt-A-Base program expanded from two bases in 2013 to 47 bases in the current filing season. Mr. Hall provided instruction at three installations in 2016.

The award was established in 2002 to recognize one or more individuals or law firms for outstanding and sustained achievements in pro bono activities in tax law. In 2007 the award was renamed in honor of the late Janet Spragens, who received the award in 2006 in recognition of her dedication to the development of low-income taxpayer clinics throughout the United States.
