Two Nelson Mullins Attorneys Recognized
for Diversity Efforts

Columbia, S.C. (March 6, 2017)–Two Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP attorneys have been recognized for their work toward promoting and achieving diversity in the legal profession.

Donna K. Lewis, a former partner in the Atlanta office, received the Sheryl Ortmann Diversity Award posthumously for her contributions to the Firm’s diversity and inclusion goals. Before joining the Firm, she served as a senior vice president of Business Development for CNN and senior vice president and chief legal officer for Turner Entertainment Group. Among her community activities, Ms. Lewis served as chair of the Board of Trustees for the Children’s School of Atlanta and also served on the Board of Directors for the Women in Cable and Telecommunications. She was active with the Atlanta Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, which resulted in the nomination of the Firm for a Community Award in 2015. Ms. Lewis also lent her leadership skills for many years to the Association of Corporate Counsel. Within the Firm, Ms. Lewis mentored young attorneys and worked to promote a more diverse law firm.

Established in 2009, the Sheryl Ortmann Diversity Award is bestowed annually to an attorney making significant achievements in promoting diversity in the legal profession. The award is named after the Firm's first female partner.

Melissa Foster Bird, a partner in the Huntington office, was recognized with the Sara Turnipseed “Women on the Go” award for her contributions to the promotion of opportunity and success for women attorneys. Ms. Bird was recognized for her advocacy for the advancement of women lawyers in the Firm and supporting programs that give them the opportunity to succeed. She also advocated for women attorneys to receive more opportunities for client development. She has served as chair of the Firm’s Paralegal and Associates committees.

The Sara Turnipseed “Women on the Go” award was established to recognize contributions by attorneys and policy advisors within the Firm who actively promote the success of women in the legal profession. It honors the late Nelson Mullins partner, Sara Turnipseed, and her tireless commitment to issues of gender equity and the promotion of opportunities for women in the legal profession.
